When Discipline Isn't Enough, There's Integrity
We all have this struggle, don't we?
Whether it's having a long to-do list with zero desire to complete it, or wanting so bad to be ahead of where we are in life or a relationship, but realizing we have no control over anything but ourselves.
Sometimes, feelings suck.
Especially when we want to give up.
Because pulling late nights to complete projects after a full time office job isn't fun.
And waiting for our needs to be met when we want them met now - physically, emotionally, mentally - isn't enjoyable.
And that yoga work out that was exciting the first time, isn't really the incredible experience the DVD or YouTube video makes it out to be when you're doing it in your bedroom with no palm trees or California sunshine. Nope, yoga, when done properly, is not a 20 minute tropical getaway experience - it's damn hard work!
So, now that I've let the cat out of the bag on how I really feel about Yoga videos...
Can we please give ourselves permission to talk about how fun pursuing our dreams isn't?
I've always had a strong work ethic. I love serving others, helping people, and the feeling of a job well done.
But, what about when no one is clapping for you or paying you for your hard work yet? What about when no one is recognizing you for your ideas and talents? What about when it is easier to quit? What about when your friends and family are telling you to consider changing course?
When everything inside of you is screaming to stop, what will keep you going?
It takes more than discipline to create daily habits that lead to long-term success.
The only way we will live to see our dreams become reality is the audacity to believe we can achieve it even when our circumstances and feelings tell us to quit.
When you feel unmotivated or doubtful, what inspires you to push on?
Before you answer, remember this: the only remainder of everything you will ever accomplish or earn, after all the money, the accolades, the achievements, the stories - is you.
That's why being in integrity with yourself (and not your feelings) is the most important thing you will ever do for your business, your family, your friends. For you. Being in integrity with yourself doesn't mean always doing what you desire - in fact, it's quite the opposite.
Carrying out visions to long term success means being patient, waiting, and having faith that your actions today will help you prosper tomorrow, next month, or even next year. Discipline keeps us performing those habits that shape our future, but walking in integrity will keep us in line with what is meant for us.
More often than not, once we are sure of who we are, what we want, and where we are headed, our discipline will be used not only to keep our habits, but to also maintain our values - our "why" for doing or not doing things.
So, the next time you are in the thick of pursuing your dreams - or a work out that is nothing like the studio filmed version made it out to be - remember who you are and, should every time you feel like quitting or doubt your abilities, know that simply being true to who you are is success enough.
